Mottowoche
To celebrate both our individuality and shared community as NMS graduates, our year decided to dress up according to specific themes, as is traditional for German schools. This so-called “Mottowoche” or “spirit week” took place on the last days of lessons, before the studying began.
Day 1: Stereotypes
Objective: wear an outfit that stereotypically represents your own or a country.
Our year represented various nationalities, which showed the diversity of our individual heritage and worldly interests. As a number of our students are of German descent, there were many Dirndl and Lederhosen walking the halls of NMS.
Day 2: Tourists
Objective: dress up as a typical tourist visiting an unknown location.
As the motto “tourist” was very vague, each student interpreted the theme differently. This resulted in a colorful array of tourists on their way to the beach, the ski resort or site seeing locations.
Day 3: Hippies
Objective: embody the spirit of the 1960s to new age hippies.
Loose, tie-dye clothes, sun glasses, headbands and peace signs were the essentials to create the feel of a Flower Power extravaganza.
Day 4: Time Travelers
Objective: wear an outfit that is typical for a specific decade in the 20th century.
Although it was a short school day, many dressed up for the occasion. Each student represented a different aspect of a specific decade, the time periods being diverse enough to create a timeline of the evolution of fashion!
Day 5: Asocials
Objective: embody the attitude of “asocials” or “Assis” in our society.
Every teenager has the need to rebel against the rules of society. As a way to poke fun at ourselves and our peers, we dressed as personas that go against the “accepted” norms of society.
Day 6: Going Clubbing
Objective: wear an outfit that shows you know how to have a good time!
As Berlin teens, we are familiar with partying and having fun! We dressed confidently in swanky outfits to highlight our young adulthood.
